From November 11th to 12th, the " Symposium on the Chemical Strategy of Main Group Elements in Revitalization " was held in Tianjin. The symposium was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and hosted by the State Key Laboratory of Elemento-organic Chemistry of Nankai University. Jing Li, the project leader of the Chemical Science Department of the NSFC and the vice president of Nankai University, Academician Jun Chen, vice president of Nankai University, Zuowei Xie from South University of Science and Technology, Academician Qilin Zhou from Nankai University and experts and scholars from domestic research institutions, universities and enterprises attended the opening ceremony.
Academician Chen firstly welcomed the attending experts and scholars and expressed gratitude to the NSFC for its funding and support for this symposium. He pointed out that Nankai University had abundant accumulation in the field of "Main Group Elements Chemistry" and hoped participating experts and scholars can strengthen original innovation through discussions and promote interdisciplinary integration and integrated innovation in multiple technical fields, demonstrating the strategic position of main group elements in the field of synthetic chemistry to serve national defense, military industry and people's daily lives.
Experts from Chemical Department of NSFC briefly introduced the important applications of main group elements in synthetic chemistry and expressed their gratitude to the State Key Laboratory of Elemento-organic Chemistry of Nankai University for the meticulous organization and preparation of this symposium. NSFC supported science and technology related projects with the aim of building an exchange platform for researchers in different fields to share scientific research results. It is hoped that participating experts and scholars would closely combine the cutting-edge research trends at home and abroad as well as the current situation of related industries in China to summarize and sort out the challenges and key scientific issues faced in the research of main group elements chemistry, providing significant references for the NSFC's strategic planning and policy decision-making in related fields.
The symposium invited more than 60 top scholars engaged in main group elements chemistry research and senior experts from relevant enterprises, as well as relevant scientific researchers from the Key Laboratory and School of Materials Science and Engineering of Nankai University. 23 invited speakers conducted thorough discussions on four topics: "Current Situation and Development Trends of Relevant Element Industries", "Structure, Synthesis and Reaction of New Element Compounds", "Application of Element Compounds", and "Element Polymers" based on their respective research content. After that, Jing Li, Zuowei Xie and Qilin Zhou respectively hosted invited reports on relevant topics and discussed topics such as how industries can establish effective communication with basic research, how to satisfy national needs and issues of freely explore innovation.
This symposium closely combined the cutting-edge research trends at home and abroad and the current situation of related industries in China. It had reached a certain consensus on the disciplinary connotation and research scope of main group elements chemistry. Besides, it had condensed key scientific issues in the field of main group elements chemistry, summarized and sorted out the current status of related element research industries, looking forward to the development trend for the next 5-10 years to assist the scientific research and innovation in the field of elemental chemistry in China and creating a brand of "Elemental Chemistry" with Chinese characteristics.
