On October 17th, 2016,
Prof. Terry McMahon from University
of Waterloo, paid a visit to the SKLEOC at the invitation of Prof.
Xianglei Kong. Prof. McMahon gave a talk titled “Probing Intra- and Inter-molecular Interactions via Mass Spectrometry, Infra-red Multiple Photo Dissociations and
Computational Chemistry”.
In his lecture, Prof. McMahon expounded his research group’s systematic
studies of the structure, interactivity, and reaction kinetics of ion-molecule
complexes by applying high-pressure mass spectrometry, Fourier transform ion
cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, infrared multiple photon dissociations
and theoretical calculations. After the report, Professor McMahon answered
further questions put forward by the audience.
Professor Terry McMahon received his PhD degree from Caltech, and
engaged in postdoctoral research in University of Alberta. He became a professor
of the department of chemistry at University of Waterloo in 1984, and held the post of dean of
the college of science from 2007-2015. Currently, Prof McMahon is a member of the
editorial board with the journals Mass
Spectrometry Reviews and Journal of
Mass Spectrometry. He was granted the honors of Barringer Award of the
Spectroscopy Society of Canada, John C. Polanyi Award, F.P. Lossing Award.
