On October 17th 2018, Prof. Williams J. Evans of UC Irvine paid visit to the SKLEOC on the
invitation of Prof. Chunming Cui. At 10:30 A.M. he delivered a speech entitled “The
Importance of Questioning Scientific Assumptions: Lessons from the Rare-Earth
and Actinide Metals” at the lecture hall of Shixian Building.
In his talk, Prof. Evans
gave in depth discussions to his group’s work on complexes of low valent
rare-earth and actinide metals. He emphasized the importance of skepticism in
science, and encourages the audience to be brave to questioning and be courageous
in action. The point is to solve scientific problems using scientific results.
Prof. Evans received large applause for his ideas on science and his fabulous
research. After the lecture, Prof. Evans enjoyed further discussions with the
faculties of the SKLEOC.
Prof. Williams J. Evans received his bachelor
degree from the University of Wisconsin, and further obtained his Ph.D. from
UCLA. He is currently distinguished professor of chemistry at UC Irvine.
