On May 18th, 2018, Prof. Olaf Daugulis of the University of Houston paid visit to the SKELOC as invited speaker of the Nankai University Lectureship on Organic Chemistry. He gave a talk entitled “New Methods for C-H Bond Functionalization” at the 10:00 A.M. in the lecture hall of Shixian Building.

Before the lecture, Prof. Qilin Zhou first delivered Prof. Daugulis the “Nankai University Lectureship on Organic Chemistry” certificate on behalf of the SKLEOC. During the lecture, Prof. Daugulis first thoroughly introduced the fascinating achievements in the field of C-H activation and the yet to be solved problems in this field. He then went to discuss his group’s efforts in C-H activation, and pointed out that the future of C-H activation is the development of simple and general directing groups. Prof. Daugulis’ excellent speech rouse great interest among the audience. Further discussions were continued after the lecture.

Prof. Olafs Daugulis obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1999 from the University of Wisconsin under the supervision of Prof. E. Vedejs. He then conducted his postdoctoral studies in the laboratory of Prof. M. Brookhart at the University of North Carolina from 2000-2003. Prof. Daugulis is currently the R.A. Welch Chair Professor of Chemistry at the University of Houston. His outstanding research has been recognized by many awards, including the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award (2008), A. P. Sloan Fellowship (2008), Normann Hacherman Award in Chemical Research (2013) and the ACS Cope Scholar Award (2014). Prof. Daugulis’ primary research interest is developing novel transition metal catalyzed reactions and polymer chemistry.
