On June 9, Prof. Henry N.C. Wong, an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, was invited by the State Key Laboratory of Elemento-Organic Chemistry to give an online lecture entitled "Chemistry of Hydroxytetraphenylenes" to the students and faculty of Nankai Organic Chemistry. The meeting was hosted by researcher Qian Peng  of the Key Laboratory and broadcasted through the platform, which was watched by more than a thousand people according to statistics.

       In the lecture, Prof. Henry N.C. Wong firstly introduced from the octet ring structure found in domestic and foreign buildings and even cities in life, and took the tension ring tetrabenzocyclooctatetraene as the core skeleton. He talked about the synthesis and chiral splitting of tetrabenzocyclooctatetraene hydroxyl compounds, how to construct compounds with helical and planar configurations of tension octet rings, and the application of tension octet rings in host-guest molecular recognition chemistry and asymmetric catalysis chemistry. After the presentation, Prof. Wong had a wonderful interaction with the teachers and students, and also shared his insights on how to face experimental failures.

It is the 60th anniversary of the Institute of Elemento-organic Chemistry this year. To congratulate this special year, Prof. Wong presented a congratulatory poem at the end of the lecture, wishing that the Institute of Elemento-organic Chemistry would achieve more influential scientific research results and create new glories in the future.

       Academician Henry N.C. Wong received his B.Sc. degree with first class honors from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1973, and was awarded the Shell Scholarship to study at University College London in the United Kingdom. After receiving his Ph.D. degree in 1976, he spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University, U.S.A. From 1979 to 1980, he was a Ramsay Memorial Fellow in the U.K., conducting independent research, and from 1980 to 1982, he was an associate researcher at the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He then returned to CUHK in 1983 and served as Head of the Department of Chemistry from 1995 to 1997, and as Dean of New Asia College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong from 2002 to July 2010; and as Vice President from 2009 to 2013. all administrative positions. Professor Huang's research interests include the total synthesis of natural compounds, the synthesis of non-natural compounds, and synthetic methodology. He is a member of the editorial board, senior reviewer or academic advisory board of several international and mainland chemistry journals, and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Science by the University of London in 1994. He is also actively involved in research development in the Mainland and is currently the Chairman of the Management Committee of the Hong Kong-Shanghai Joint Laboratory of Chemical Synthesis, Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a visiting and advisory professor at several Mainland universities. Over the years, he has been awarded many prizes, including the Second Prize of the National Natural Science of China (1997), the Croucher Foundation Outstanding Research Award (1999-2000), and has been elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (formerly known as the Third World Academy of Sciences) and the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences in 1999, 2004 and 2015 respectively.
