Professor Xiaochen Wang’s group have developed a method for metal-free enantioselective reduction of 2-vinylpyridines with catalysis by chiral spiro-bicyclic bisboranes. The reaction is the first example of a metal-free borane-catalyzed enantioselective pyridine reduction and a rare example of an enantioselective reduction of unprotected pyridines. The excellent functional group tolerance of this method is its major advantage relative to all the other existing methods. In addition, the low catalyst loading and the mild reaction conditions (ambient temperature and no use of compressed hydrogen gas) make it attractive for industrial applications.
