On May 16th of 2019, Prof. Jeffery Bode of ETH Zürich paid visit to the SKLEOC as invited speaker of the Nankai University on Organic Chemistry. He dedicated a speech entitled “Predictable and Programmable Organic Synthesis” at the Lecture Hall of Shixian Building at 4:00 PM.
Prior to the talk, Prof. Qilin Zhou first presented to Prof. Bode the “Nankai University Lectureship on Organic Chemistry” certificate on behalf of the SKLEOC. During the lecture, Prof. Bode mainly discussed their achievements in efficient synthesis of peptide building blocks and the applications of “SnAP” reagents in the versatile construction of heterocycles. He shared in the talk his group’s focus and perspectives on the future of organic synthesis. After the talk, the audience had in depth discussions concerning details of the demonstrated chemistry.
Prof. Bode obtained his Ph.D. from ETH Zürich in 2001, after which he went to the Tokyo Institute of Technology for postdoctoral research. He began his independent career in 2003 at U.C. Santa Barbara. He then moved to the University of Pennsylvania in 2007 and stayed till 2009, during which he was promoted to full professor. Since 2010, he took position at ETH Zürich. His main research interests are peptide and protein synthesis, synthesis of heterocycles and synthetic fermentation. He has authored more than 180 SCI publications. His research has been recognized by numerous awards including the Mukaiyama Award, Elias J. Corey Award for Outstanding Original Contribution, Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award, National Science Foundation CAREER Award. Prof. Bode is also co-Editor-in-Chief of Helvetica Chimica Acta and executive editor of Encyclopedia of Reagents for Organic Synthesis.
