On October 28, 2024, Prof. Yong Qin from Sichuan University was invited by State Key Laboratory of Elemento-organic Chemistry to visit on Nankai Lectureship on Organic Chemistry. Prof. Qin gave an academic lecture entitled “Precision Synthesis-Oriented Total Synthesis of Natural Products: From Basic Research to Industrial Applications” in Shixian Building. The lecture was hosted by Prof. Jianhua Xie, deputy Director of the Key Laboratory, and attracted nearly 150 participants from the Key Laboratory and the College of Chemistry.

At the beginning, Prof. Chunming Cui, Director of the Key Laboratory, presented the certificate of “Nankai Lectureship on Organic Chemistry” to Prof. Qin. Then Prof. Qin Yong introduced his team's synthetic methods and strategies of representative cyclopropanation tandem reaction starting from the important role of total synthesis of natural products in the process of new drug discovery. By using these methods and strategies, his team has accomplished the challenging total synthesis of more than 100 natural products and drugs, including complex indole alkaloids and diterpene alkaloids. In addition, Prof. Qin also demonstrated the contribution of total synthesis research in serving people's life&health and revolutionizing drug synthesis process routes, and shared his team's exploration of industrializing of natural drugs with complex structures and high industrial manufacturing difficulties, such as orlistat, a good drug for weight-reduction, and sulfadiazepine sodium, an excellent anticoagulant drug.

After the presentation, Prof. Qin had a warm and in-depth interaction with the students and teachers present. He patiently and carefully answered the cutting-edge research and the actual production process of the field of questions from teachers and students, and attendants highly appreciated Prof. Qin's work on total synthesis in promoting high-quality and low-cost drug research and development.
