Based on the 2019 Science & Technology week of Tianjin and Nankai University and the file “Notification of the Public Opening of State Key Laboratories on the Science & Technology Week of 2019” given by the Depart of Basic Research of Ministry of Science and Technology, the SKLEOC will hold its public opening week from May 19th-26th as part of the 2019 Science & Technology Week of China and Tianjin. This year is the 33rd Science & Technology Week of Tianjin. The importance of the week was further emphasized via President Xi’s ideas that “Scientific innovation and scientific popularization are the two wings of innovative development, these two wings are of equal importance” and the ideas of the report of the 19th CPC National Congress to “development the spirit of science and popularize the knowledge of science”. The opening week was greatly supported by the Science and Technology Department of Nankai and the SKLEOC.

The visiting of President Xi to the College of Chemistry and the SKLEOC provided an excellent opportunity to advertise our institute towards the public. We were able to attract students and citizens of different age and background to a visit of the SKLEOC to improve their understandings of the basics of modern science and technology. 423 participants took part in the event, including the junior and senior high students and teachers of Nankai Middle School, Tianjin No.1 Middle School, Tianjin Binhai Middle School Attached to Tianjin Foreign Studies University, Tianjin No. 20 Middle School, Tianjin No. 7 Middle School, Wumalu Elementary School, students of the college of chemistry and other citizens. Prof. Jianyu Zheng gave a lecture on popular science entitled “Chemistry – Science of Discovery and Innovation”. The lecture was well applauded by the visitors; the visitors were then shown to different parts of the SKLEOC with students of the College of Chemistry serving as tour guides.

The volunteers of Nankai University were able to overcome the drastic conditions of hot weather and stormy days of the week. They demonstrated to the visitors intuitively the development of the institute, the principles, structures and applications of the respective instruments. The visitors had a deeper understanding to the development of science in China, the usage of scientific equipment, and the relationship between chemistry and human life. The event serves to provide to the public an enhancement in the appreciation in modern scientific knowledge and scientific creativity. The thoughtful arrangement of the week was highly praised by the visitors.
