In the afternoon of September 21, 2023, the State Key Laboratory of Elemento- organic Chemistry of Nankai University held a welcome meeting to welcome all freshmen to join the family of organic disciplines for 2023 postgraduates of organic disciplines in the lecture hall of Shixian Building. Prof. Chunming Cui, Director of the Key Laboratory and Director of the Institute of Elemento-organic Chemistry, Lingyan Liu, Secretary of the General Party Branch of the Institute of Elemento-organic Chemistry, Prof. Jianhua Xie, Deputy Director of the Institute of Elemento-organic Chemistry and Prof. Mengchun Ye, Deputy Director of the Institute of Elemento-organic Chemistry attended the meeting and the meeting was chaired by Lingyan Liu.
At the beginning, Prof. Cui delivered a speech about the development process of the Institute of Elemento-organic Chemistry from the establishment of Principal Shixian Yang in 1959 to today. With the joint efforts of several generations of teachers and students, the Institute has now become a high-level research institute which integrates scientific research and teaching with a high reputation both domestically and internationally. He mentioned that Nankai University has a strong strength in the field of organic science and a vast experimental platform. He called on all new students to shoulder the heavy responsibility, pay attention to personal research training and promote the further development in the field of organic science.
Then Prof. Xie introduced the graduate training plan, mid-term assessment regulations and graduation thesis requirements, emphasizing the relevant requirements for graduate course learning. He encouraged students to choose suitable courses and academic lectures based on their own research direction. He hoped that students would have a wide range of knowledge and advocates that everyone focus on cultivating scientific abilities, keeping experimental records and cultivating good research habits.
Teacher Liu introduced various scholarships and relevant rules for the organic discipline. There are numerous awards and generous rewards for the organic discipline, including the National Scholarship, Chen Ruyu Scholarship, Wanhua Scholarship, TCI Scholarship and Gongneng Scholarship. Through the establishment of these scholarships, students are encouraged to work hard in scientific research and contribute to the high-quality development of organic chemistry.
Prof. Ye used classic instruments and safety cases from the Institute as the starting point to explain the usage standards of numerous instruments and the safety precautions to be taken in experiments. He emphasized the importance of experimental safety and advocated for everyone to actively cooperate with the safety standard operation of the college to further promote high-level laboratory safety management work and lay a solid foundation for the construction of the discipline and the college.
Finally, the teachers of the Institute distributed the 50th History Album of the Institute of Elemento-organic Chemistry, the Memorial Album of Academician Ruyu Chen, the Introduction to the State Key Laboratory of Elemento-organic Chemistry, the Laboratory Safety Manual, the Work Manual, some special souvenirs of Institute and snack packs to the new graduate students. We hope that new students can forge ahead, work hard and strive to become outstanding organic chemists in the new era of Nankai!
