On May 28th 2019, Prof. Floyd Romesberg of The Scripps Research Institute paid visit to the SKLEOC as an invited speaker of the Nankai University Lectureship on Organic Chemistry. Prof. Romesberg made a speech entitled “A Semi-Synthetic Organism that Stores and Retrieves Increased Genetic Information” at the lecture hall of Shixian Building at 4 PM.

Before the event, Prof. Qilin Zhou dedicated to Prof. Romesberg the “Nankai University Lectureship on Organic Chemistry” certificate on behalf of the SKLEOC. During his talk, Prof. Romesberg demonstrated their recent achievements in inducing unnatural base pairs into biological system to create new living organisms. The hall was packed with this inspiring lecture. Prof. Romesberg then had further discussions with the audience after the talk.

Prof. Floyd Romesberg received his Ph.D. in 1994 from Cornell University, and then moved to UC Berkeley for postdoctoral studies. He began his independent career in 1998 at The Scripps Research Institute and was promoted to full professor in 2014. Prof. Romesberg works in the field of chemical biology, in which his primary interests are unnatural base pairs, novel broad-spectrum antibiotics, protein studies and the mechanism of DNA damage induced mutations. He currently authored over 140 SCI publications. His excellent research has been recognized by numerous awards including the Camille Dreyfus Teacher Scholar Award, NSF Career Award, Discover Magazine Technology Innovation Award, ACS Nobel Laureate Signature Award and the RSC 2018 Bioorganic Chemistry Award.
